                                                                Paper chromatography lab

Pre-lab questions:

1. What colors are mixtures?
White and red makes pink

2. What substance could be used to separate a mixture? Water could be used to separate a mixture

Hypothesis:

1.Can green separate into its component colors? If yes, then which colors will separate out? I think that green can separate to component colors, it will separate out to yellow and blue.

2.Can black separate into its component colors? If yes, then which colors will separate out? I think that black can separate into component colors, it will separate into all the component colors.

Materials:

  • Goggles
  • Green and black dye
  • Strips of filter papers
  • Metric ruler
  • Plastic cup
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Tape
  • Pencil
Procedure:
1.) Using the ruler, cut the filter paper into long, rectangular strips, about 3 cm x 10cm. *You need 4*

2.) Measure 0.5 cm from the bottom of the paper strip and draw a horizontal line with your pencil across the width of the strip. Then, use the black dye to make a line on the pencil line.

3.) Tape the paper strip around the pencil so that the very bottom of the strip touches the water/alcohol.

black dye w/ water
The pigment did not react to the water, so no result The pigment did not react with water 1/2 = 0.5 The pigment had no result
Black dye with other solution
 2 cm3.6 cm  3.6/2 =1.8 2 cm
Green dye w/ water
The pigment did not react to the water, no result No result 1/2 = 0.5 The pigment had no result
Green dye with other solution

Post-lab questions:

1. I would give the black ink the classification of mixture, ink separates into its constituent pure substances, ink is a mixture.
2. The Rf value tells you about the solubility of a separated component (black ink) in the mobile phase solvent is that the blank ink moved faster with the rubbing alcohol and not the water.
3. The mobile phase with the black dye in rubbing alcohol worked best.
4. The stationary phase in this experiment was the green dye with water.
5. If I can alter the experiment to test another, I would change the condition of the green dye with water, I would test it a few times to see if you can get at least some results out of it.
